Iwan Sulistyo received his Master of Arts (cum laude) in International Relations from Universitas Gadjah Mada in April 2012 and Bachelor of Social Science in Criminology from the University of Indonesia in June 2009. Previously, from 2004-2005, he had been a student in The Department of Agricultural Engineering (at that time, it was still a department; but recently has become a faculty), the Faculty of Agriculture, at Universitas Andalas.
Sulistyo is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of International Relations at Universitas Lampung, Indonesia. He is also one of the members of the Indonesian Community for European Studies (ICES). Prior to that, he started his academic career as a young lecturer at Universitas Ekasakti (2013-15), Padang, in the Department of Government, teaching Introduction to Government, Demography and Environment; and also in the Department of Public Administration, teaching Planning. He also taught in the Department of International Relations at Andalas University (2014-15), teaching International Relations in Southeast Asia, Global Governance, International Relations in East Asia, Security and Strategic Studies, and Transnational Crime and Terrorism.
His research concentrates on International/Global Security, Transnational Crimes in the broadest spectrum, White-Collar Crimes, International Crimes, International Relations in Europe, Democracy and Human Rights, Defense Policy, and the Military Role.
Sulistyo’s areas of teaching are International/Global Security, Strategic Studies, Diplomacy, Global-Local Security Studies, Defence and Security Diplomacy, Introduction to Law, Introduction to Political Science, and International Law.
Sulistyo is a fellow/researcher at Academic Community for International and Transnational Crime Studies (ACITCS), a non-profit and independent think tank that focuses on three main activities: internal courses on international crime, democracy & human rights, and transnational crime; research; and regular panel academic discussions.
Sulistyo participated at The 9th World Human Rights Cities Forum 2019 in Gwangju, The Republic of Korea, presenting a full paper on how the local government plays its role in adopting SDGs as a global agenda and fulfilling human rights. Together with his students, he also joined the 11th World Human Rights Cities Forum 2021 performing their full paper on trust building and the roles of local religious leaders in countering covid-19 pandemic within society.
In 2021, he is the chairman of the organizing committee of The 2nd Universitas Lampung International Conference on Social Sciences (ULICoSS); and has actively involved in organizing an “International Indonesia Conference on Interdisciplinary Studies” in 2018 and also Summer School between the University of Lampung and Zagreb University Croatia titled “The Wellspring of Academic Spirit: Digital Data and Security on the Sustainable Development Era” in 2019.
From July to September 2009, Sulistyo had been a technical assistant in a research on people smuggling led by Prof. Adrianus Meliala, a prominent criminologist in Indonesia. The project eventually produced a “Guide Book for the Officers in Handling the People Smuggling Activities and Criminal Offense related to People Smuggling”. It was a collaboration between the Department of Criminology of The University of Indonesia, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and the Australian Federal Police (AFP).
In 2007, Sulistyo was an Editor in Chief of “Warta Pemira”, a tabloid published by Suara Mahasiswa UI (SUMA, student press of Universitas Indonesia) which informs about politics on campus.
